Journey Through The Past 7 : Neil Young : After the goldrush

This potted history of music via my collection is named after one of Neil Young's stranger albums the double soundtrack, compilation that probably rightly bombed and was also one of the earliest indications of how stubbornly he could follow his muse.

After The Goldrush  was a mix of solo and Crazy Horse material - again inspired as an unofficial soundtrack.  It co-opted the young guitar prodigy Nils Lofgren (now with Springsteen's E Street Band) whom Young instructed to play piano on at least one track even though he could not play piano. Famously it has Southern Man on it which also spawned the Lynyrd Skynryd song Sweet Home Alabama.

By today's standards it is an incredibly short album (but aren't many of today's just way to long?) and in addition to Southern Man it also has a number of songs that Young still includes in his shows in After the Goldrush, Only love can break your heart, I Believe in You and Don't let it Bring You Down.

I first heard it when Terry bought it (one of the few he did and they were always interesting choices).  I knew the title track through this cover by the UK folk group Prelude.  I bought it again when Terry left for Uni.

I think I will put it on now but there will be more posts on some of Neil Young's classic and non classic albums.
