I think of Rod Stewart, along with the likes of Joe Cocker as one of rock's best interpretative singers. Unlike Joe Cocker though, whose songwriting was at best pretty ham-fisted, Rod also wrote some great songs. But one of my favourite Rod covers is his version of Danny Whitten's I don't want to talk about it.
Danny was Neil Young's original guitar foil in Crazy Horse - whose problems with heroin eventually lead to him to being fired. While he did not die of an overdose as commonly believed he did die on the night he was fired and his death did inspire The Needle and The Damage Done.
While I do really enjoy the original Crazy Horse version - Rod does nail it.
